Arena of Gold Review

Look and Feel

Arena of Gold is a slots game that has been developed by All41 Studios and was released by Microgaming in April 2020. It’s an epic game – epic in the fact that it is (yet) another online video slots game that features Ancient Rome. This time we visit a Roman coliseum where Gladiators do battle – the ‘A’ feature to the daily Christians v Lions event (which was something that actually happened in Roman times) in which the final score was usually Christians 0, Lions 1.

Note: No Christians were hurt during the making of this slot, but one lion did stub their toe.

Jackpot

This slot has three progressive jackpots! There is the ‘Mini’ jackpot which seeds at £60, the ‘Mega’ jackpot which seeds at £200, and the ‘Maxi’ jackpot which seeds at £2,000. Details of how these jackpots can be obtained can be found further on in this review.

Play for Real Money

If you are in the UK then any site at which you can play Arena of Gold will be bound by UKGC regulations. This means that you will be unable to play Arena of Gold for play money unless offered by a casino that you’ve signed up to. Once you are registered at a site you can of course play for real money too! Why not sign up at one of JustSlots’ recommended casinos, like Casino Calzone? Rules

Arena of Gold has five reels, three rows and a fixed number of 25 paylines. As has become the norm when it comes to video slots these days, you pay one cash value per spin, as opposed to a number of coins per payline. Your bet can be anything from £0.10 to £50.00.

All wins are achieved by landing at least three identical symbols on a payline from left-to-right starting from the left-hand reel. Wins are paid as a multiple of the size of your bet, as indicated by the following table:

The Emperor symbol is wild in this game and he gives you a thumbs up by substituting for all other symbols aside from the scatter symbol and the coin symbol.

The Coliseum symbol is a scatter. You only need to land three in any position on the reels to win a prize the same size as your bet. Scatter only appear in reels 1, 3 and 5.

If you land three scatters then you trigger the free spins feature, which will see you awarded five free spins. If you land three scatters while free spins are active, then you are awarded an initial three free spins.

During free spins the central reel become a giant reel full of symbols that are nine times the size of the normal symbols. Such symbols count as nine smaller symbols, although a giant scatter still counts as only one scatter.

Watch out for gold coins while you are playing. If you land at least six golden coin symbols then you trigger the Golden Re-spins Jackpot Game. If you fill all fifteen positions with coins, then you are awarded the maxi jackpot. You are awarded three re-spins and if you land any coins during a re-spin and the number of re-spins is reset back to three. During re-spins all other symbols become blank. All coins that land during re-spins remain on the reels. Coins may reveal a multiplier prize (up to 2,500 your bet size, or the mini or mega jackpot). The feature ends when no more coins land.

Graphics and Sounds

Not only is this game a trip back to Ancient Rome, it’s a trip back to the days when graphically, online slots games were largely static. The symbols do nothing except land – there’s barely any animation of any kind, aside from a fluttering of rose petals when you win big. The graphics are good, though – just not very animated.

This slot plays along to a generic orchestral theme that sounds suitably epic. The rest of the sound effects used are typical of this type of game – adequate, not inspirational.

Conclusion

The Romans were an advanced empire, so it’s a little hard to understand why Microgaming have taken a step backwards in releasing such an ‘old-fashioned’ slot. Every feature in this slot is one that we’ve seen used elsewhere.

Still, not every new slot has to be dazzling, and there are countless slots players out there who prefer simpler slots. If that describes you, then you might just appreciate Arena of Gold from All41 Studios and Microgaming. Why not sign up at one of JustSlot’s recommended casinos so you can play it?
