Beetlejuice Megaways Review

Look and Feel

Beetlejuice Megaways is an April 2020 release from SG Digital, with the ‘MegaWays’ concept leased from Big Time Gaming. This slot is based on a 1998 Tim Burton-directed movie starring Michael Keaton as the eponymous obnoxious poltergeist. In the movie a happy young couple (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) die, but decide to haunt their home as ghosts. They are aghast when the new inhabitants move in and remodel their dream house completely, so they enlist the help of Beetlejuice to help scare them away. Not everything … goes well … but at least everyone has a spooky time!

Jackpot

This game does not have a progressive jackpot however, with so many potential paylines big wins are a possibility (but never a certainty). No matter how much you win, you will find that your payout for any single win on a spin is capped at £250,000.

Play for Real Money

If you are in the UK you are probably used to by now of the limitations that prevent you from playing this game for play money. Some casinos will allow you to play ‘free’ as long as you’ve signed up with them, but if you’ve done that you may as well play for real money anyhow! Once casino of note is Kaboo Casino, which comes with our hearty recommendation. If you sign up there don’t forget to claim any bonuses you are entitled to!

Rules

In normal play this slot has five rows and – thanks to the MegaWays concept – up to 258,832 pay lines. The screen is split in half, but only the bottom half of the screen (maximum six reels) is in play most of the game.

You pay a ‘total bet’ amount per spin. This amount can be anything from £0.10 to £500.00.

Wins are secured by landing identical symbols on consecutive reels, from the left-hand reel onwards. The actual position of each symbol on a reel doesn’t matter – anywhere will do! All wins are payed as multiples of your total bet, as outlined below:

The ‘Wild’ symbol is wild in this game and substitutes for all other symbols aside from the ‘Beetlejuice Bonus’ and ‘Ghost’ symbols.

The ‘Beetlejuice Bonus’ game is a scatter and appears on all reels. If you land three or more bonus symbols then you earn yourself the bonus game.

The ‘Ghost’ symbol is on all reels too, and once landed the ghost will transform into a different symbol. All ghost symbols that land on the same spin will turn into the same symbol (except ‘Wild’ or ‘Beetlejuice Bonus’).

As with most MegaWays games, this slot has the cascading reels feature. All winning symbols explode and new ones drop down to replace them. In addition, the top half of the playing grid becomes active. The cascading symbols continue until no more wins are triggered.

Three bonus symbols award eight free spins, four awards a dozen and five awards the maximum of sixteen. You can re-trigger more free spins during this feature, but the number of free spins added are four, six or eight respectively. During free spins there’s a win multiplier in play. This starts at x1 and increases by one for each cascading combination.

Graphics and Sounds

This game is played to a background of one of the themes from the movie which, movie fans who are aware of Tim Burton will surely know, was penned by Danny Elfman. The rest of the sounds used are the habitual ones found in most slots games – the pounding of the reels, fanfares when a land wins, and crunching sounds when the symbols explode.

Graphically this title is a little disappointing, especially when you consider the rich source material. Beetlejuice remains at the side of the reels, grinning but completely static. The symbols themselves are barely animated too. When compared to other movie-based slots, this title is perhaps not as visually-pleasing as you might have expected it to be.

Conclusion

All MegaWays slots are very entertaining to play, but we can’t help but think the SG Digital have missed something of a trick here. Visually, Beetlejuice was certainly a very appealing movie with its dark theme and typical Tim Burton-style visuals. This is something that is simply not carried over into this video slot.

There is nothing wrong with the gameplay – that’s one thing that cannot be denied. Once the wins start cascading and the upper half of the screen comes into play (with a maximum of twelve rows per column) matters become quiet exciting. We just think that this game could have been better-looking.

Why not say ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ (you have to see the movie to get this reference) at one of JustSlots’ recommended online casinos or slots sites?
