The Gladiator slot is one of the most popular progressive jackpots from Playtech. Based on the movie with Russel Crowe, this game is epic on its own terms and certainly does the movie justice. Payouts are usually well above the million mark and the game has several bonus features to keep the adrenaline running. We have all you need to know to prepare for battle in this Gladiator slot review.
Look and Feel
If you loved the movie, you surely won’t be disappointed by the Gladiator slot. Set in the colosseum against the golden sky, this game feels nothing less than simply majestic. You’ll find Commodus, Lucilla, Juba, Gracchus and Proximo, on the reels. Sadly, Russell Crowe is only represented by the Gladiator’s helmet but perhaps it will be you who will step into Maximus’ place to find your own place of glory.
How to Play
Before the fight begins, prepare by setting your bet size. In this Playtech slot, you have the option to choose how many lines you want to bet on, which is from 1 to all 25 of them. Then choose how much you want to bet on per line under Line Bet. Line Bet starts at 1p, which makes minimum bet 25p a spin. It goes up to £1 so you can take it all the way up to £25 a spin if you’re a high roller.
The Autoplay button has pre-sets going up to 99 spins. There’s also a Turbo Mode which makes each spin shorter, and therefore overall faster.
If you’re wondering how to win the Gladiator Jackpot, you can jump straight to the “Special Features and Bonuses” section in this review.

- Gracchus (Derek Jacobi)
- Juba (Djimon Hounsou), Proximo (Oliver Reed)
- Colosseum (also Scatter)
- Wilds: Gladiator Helmet
- Scatter: Colosseum
Special Features and Bonuses
The Gladiator slot is not just famous because of the movie, but also for its massive jackpot. We know that’s what you have your eyes on, so we’ll start there.
How to Win the Jackpot: You will have to spin at least 3 of the Gladiator Helmet wilds on Reels 2, 3 and 4 to enter the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus Game. The Wilds can land anywhere on the reels and doesn’t need to be on a payline. Of course, as Wild symbols they can also substitute for other symbols other than the Scatter to give you a winning payline.
Once you’re in the bonus round, you’ll find a new screen with nine helmets. You’ll find that these helmets come in Gold, Silver and Bronze, with Gold being the most valuable. If it turns out that you have 9 Gold helmets, then congratulations, that progressive jackpot is yours!
However, if you don’t have all 9 Gold helmets, the value of all the helmets will be added up together to give you a cash prize. Do note that while the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus can be triggered during both the base game and during Free Games, the jackpot itself cannot be won when the round is triggered during Free Games.
Colosseum Bonus: The Colosseum is the Scatter and when you get 3 or more of these symbols anywhere on the reels, you’ll enter a pick-me bonus game. Here, you’ll see 4 rows of stones, each row is for different kinds of prizes. You get to pick the stone in each row:
1st row: this is the number of Free Games you’ll get
2nd row: this is the Multipliers that will go with your Free Games
3rd row: this is where you can pick up extra Scatter symbols that can get you into the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus Game
4th row: extra Wilds and symbols During Free Games you can’t re-trigger the feature, although a Commodus symbol on Reel 3 will get you another 3 Free Spins.
Gamble Feature: With each win, you also have the chance to double it up via the Gamble Feature. Guess the colour of the card (red or black) and your win will either double if you’re correct or be gone if you’re wrong.
Gladiator Compared to Other Slots
Playtech is rather famous for rolling out progressive games, and Gladiator is one of its most famous jackpots. Compared to the newer Age of the Gods jackpot slots series, Gladiator’s average jackpot payout is roughly double the size at £1 million compared to Age of the Gods at £500k or so. On the other hand, the Gladiator jackpot does take longer to ripen paying out usually around the 14-week mark compared to Age of the Gods at 6 or 7 weeks.
If you have your eyes set on jackpots that pay out around the million mark, then slots like Mega Moolah and Mega Fortune should also be on your to-do list.
The Gladiator slot RTP is at 94.1% which is just a tiny bit lower than regular video slots that are coming out nowadays. This is really not bad considering that Gladiator is a progressive slot. Without the jackpot, Gladiator is generally a low to medium volatility game so the payouts tend to be small but come often enough to keep you going.
Tips for Playing Gladiator
Let’s talk about the number of lines you should bet on in Gladiator. To begin with, the Gladiator Jackpot Bonus Game, the feature that lets you win the progressive jackpot, is triggered by Wild symbols anywhere on Reels 2, 3 and 4, and it doesn’t need to be on an active payline. It may therefore be tempting to just play 1 line with the minimum bet of £0.25 with your eyes set on the jackpot, and nothing but the jackpot.
You could of course do that, but we do think it’s worthwhile betting on a few more lines. That’s because Commodus and Lucilla are rather high paying symbols that can land you a handsome fortune even if you don’t snatch that coveted jackpot prize. Not only that, but wins in general will help keep your bankroll nice and padded as you keep battling it out for the ultimate prize.
Hype or Not?
If you enjoyed the movie, then you will surely enjoy the Gladiator slot from Playtech. As far as jackpot games are concerned, this does pay out fairly well at the million mark and it is one of the bigger jackpot games. Progressive jackpots may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re a jackpot hunter then this game from Playtech is a classic.
In terms of progressive jackpots, Playtech’s Gladiator is pretty up there. Although not everyone one of us is going to walk away with the jackpot, this Gladiator slot game is still entertaining enough. The graphics are gorgeous and remain faithful to the film. The gameplay is excellent with the bonus features and pick me games. Not to mention that the payout is usually around the million mark which can help you clinch millionaire status if that’s your goal.
