Hotline 2 Review

Look and Feel

Hotline 2 is a 5 reel, 3 row slot from NetEnt with the ‘all ways pay’ feature meaning there are 243 paylines in total. To be honest, we’d no idea NetEnt had ever put out a game called Hotline, but we’ve found it lurking about in one of the darkest corners of the internet. It looks quite fun with a very cool animated intro that shows that ‘Hotline’ is a ‘tribute’ to that most 80s of 80s USTV cop shows, Miami Vice. The intro even has its own ‘cast list’ of fake stars … Danny Champion as Quinn, Robert T. Grier as Riviera and even a special guest star.

Hotline 2 is then like Zombieland 2 in that it’s a sequel that nobody asked for. This time NetEnt have not bothered with an introduction, which is kind of telling. Quinn and Riviera are back though, with an unknown brand-new special guest star. Let’s see if Hotline 2 is better than Zombieland 2 then, which, in all honesty, should not be that hard.

Despite this slot being set around the swishest sections of Miami Beach, it does not have a progressive jackpot. The most that is available to win is 5,184 times the value of your bet.

Play for Real Money

Call the cops! Because of those miscreants at the UKGC, you will not be able to play Hotline 2 for free or for play money. Don’t worry though, there are many dozens of places where you’ll be able to find Hotline 2 to play for real cash. Why not pop along to Genting Bet, the casino with a sports book attached? You can play countless games there, and make sure you check out the site’s many superb offers.

To access the hotline in Hotline 2 you need first to select your bet size. This is a ‘one fee’ slot and your bet size can be anything from £0.10 to £50.00.

As this is an ‘all ways’ pay slot you only need to land identical symbols on successive reels from the left-hand reel onwards in order to secure a pay-out. The actual reel that each symbol lands on does not matter. Wins are paid as a proportion of your bet size, as follows:

Symbol3 on a payline4 on a payline5 on a payline
Kitty Weiss258
Other dude0.71.53
Orange Diamond0.40.81.2
Purple Gem0.30.61
Blue Gem0.20.40.6
Green Gem0.10.20.4

Here, the ‘Hotline’ feature is a bonus feature that ups the profitability of wins if selected. At the base level, reel three is the only hotline. With ‘double bet’ reels three and four are hotlines and your base bet is doubled. With ‘triple bet’ all three middle reels are hotlines and your base bet is tripled.

Wild symbols can land on any of the middle three reels in the main game and in free spins. Wilds substitute for all other symbols aside from the scatter symbols. If a wild lands on a hotline during the base game and is involved in a win, then it expands to cover the entire reel possibly triggering more wins. If wild lands on a hotline during free spins then it automatically expands whether it is involved in a win or not.

The scatter symbols only appear on the middle three reels and if three of them appear during the main game then seven free spins are activated. If a wild lands in any of the middle three reels during free spins it increases the height of the reel by one, increasing the number of potential winning lines. Reels can expand to up to six symbols high, and the maximum number of winning paylines is 1,944.

If a reel reaches six symbols high then you are awarded two more free spins if the reel is a hotline, and one more free spin if it is not.

There is the option to buy the free spins feature, but this option will probably be unavailable at online slots sites and casinos with a UKGC licence.

Graphics and Sounds

Graphically, this game does remind you a get deal of the original 1980s TV show Miami Vice (but, thankfully, not the awful 2006 Michael Mann movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx). In that show the cops were as interested in looking stylish as they were in catching miscreants. It’s all sultry sunsets and cool, art deco style colours.

The music will take you right back to the 1980s as well, which many not actually be that much of a good thing. The main track is a sax-lead ballad that could have come straight from the TV show’s soundtrack. It is very authentic, as are the sounds of reels rolling around. This slot will take you back forty years in time which, if you are under 40 years of age, might not be what you want!

Hotline, which was released in 2018, was played for a bit but then quickly forgotten about. It’s a real surprise that NetEnt have chosen to release a sequel, and one that simply regurgitates most of the original features of the first game.

We think, like 2018’s hotline people will play this game for a while, enjoy it, and then move on to something else. We could be wrong though. If you enjoyed the original Hotline, or if you feel that Hotline 2 could be one of the best new online slots of 2020, why not take it for a spin at one of our many recommended online casinos?

Q. How like the original Hotline online slots game is Hotline 2?

A. Very like. The ‘hotline’ feature was horizontal though (here it is vertical) and the game only had 30 paylines whereas this new slot has ‘all ways pay’ at 243 paylines, although that can increase to 1,944 with the special features.

Q. Have NetEnt released many sequels of their online slot games?

A. Not many. Of course, there is Gonzo’s Quest Megaways, but that’s more of a re-imaging than a direct sequel. We can think of Twin Spin 2, Dead or Alive 2 and Butterfly Staxx 2, plus Finn’s Golden Tavern.

Q. What games are forthcoming from NetEnt in the next few months?

A. In the near future you can expect to see Gordon Ramsay: Hell’s Kitchen, Disco Danny, Rage of the Seas and Dark King: Forbidden Riches.
