Medusa Review

The Medusa slot from NextGen is practically a cult classic today. The game is based on a 5 reel, 25 payline format, with Free Spins, multipliers and bonus games. There are other Medusa slots out there, including Medusa Megaways, but this Medusa Slot review will be about the original from NextGen. Keep reading to find out why we think this is the best one out there!

Look and Feel

Medusa is no spring chicken and the style of the graphics will feel a little dated. However, it’s still fairly well done, with detailed symbols set in a majestic Greek pantheon against a moody sky, coupled with an equally moody soundtrack. Medusa herself is seductively beautiful with her green eyes, yet at the same time the snakes on her head remind you of the danger she is.

The game menu feels at first a bit cluttered as NextGen decided to decorate all the buttons in stone as well, but this takes literally two seconds to get used to.

How to Play

The Medusa slot lets you choose the number of paylines you want to bet on, from 1 to 25. Use the + and – buttons to adjust. Next, you just your bet per line. It starts at 1p and goes up to £5.

This means that minimum bet per spin could start at just £0.01 a spin. You may find it tempting to play Medusa as a penny slot, but we would bet on more lines because your chances of getting a winning spin would be higher. Even if you play all 25 betlines, that can still be as low as £0.25 a spin which is where many video slots have their minimum bet size today.

Once bet is set, you can press the Spin button. There is an Autoplay feature, as well as a Max Bet button which will increase your Bet size to £5 without changing the number of lines. If you want to adjust the music, the speaker icon is rather small, but you’ll find it above the red “Info” button on the left side of the game menu bar.

Symbols in Medusa

These are the symbols in Medusa, starting from the highest value:

  • Pantheon
  • Soldiers
  • Medusa Coin, Snake
  • Medusa Game logo (also a Scatter)
  • Earrings, Sandals with Wings
  • Vase, Grapes
  • Spearhead

Special Symbols

  • Wild:Medusa (the woman)
  • Scatter: Medusa Game Logo, Soldier, Pegasus

Special Features and Bonuses

The Medusa slot has several bonus features that has made the game such a success:

Turned to Stone Re-spins: Should you get 3 Medusa Wilds, you will trigger this feature with 3 re-spins, all of which come with a 3x multiplier. Additionally, either Reel 2, 3 or 4 will turn into an entire reel of expanded Wilds.

Once Bitten Bonus: 3 of the Medusa Logo Scatters will get you 10 Free Spins with a 2x multiplier. During this bonus round, every time you see a Soldier symbol appear, you’ll get 3 Super Spins that will get played after the 10 Free Spins are finished. Super Spins come with a 5x multiplier.

Pegasus Bonus: When 3 Pegasus symbols appear, you’ll trigger a pick-me bonus game. You’ll get to pick a Pegasus to reveal a prize that can be as massive as 50x your bet. On top of that, you may also get to reveal a Pick Again or a Win All option. The Pegasus Bonus can be triggered in the Free Spins and Super Spins rounds and if so, then all wins will have a 2x and 5x multiplier respectively.

Medusa Compared to Other Slots

Medusa Megaways is also now available and the gameplay is very different from the original. You can expect tons of ways-to-win as with all Megaways slots, as well as the usual Megaways bonus features like Cascading Reels. While Medusa Megaways has multipliers in its bonus games, they are nowhere as generous as the original Medusa. The Megaways also has smaller payouts in comparison.

Recently, Blueprint Gaming also released a slot called Medusa. Other than the name, the similarity more or less stops there. Visually, Medusa looks more like the blue-skinned creature from the Avatar movie, and the game doesn’t have nearly as many bonus features as NextGen’s Medusa.

Medusa Fairness

The Medusa slot has a RTP at 95.42%, which is a hairline lower than the average video slot today. This doesn’t make it bad though. For the world of online slots to be exciting, it takes different kinds of gameplay ranging from a small steady trickle of payouts, to bigger prizes that require longer waits. Medusa sits a bit more closely to the latter and is known to be a medium high variance slot.

If these numbers aren’t good enough, then consider player experience. As one of the most popular online slots, players have had good experiences with this game from NextGen and keep going back to it time and time again.

Tips for Playing Medusa

You could in theory go for the minimum bet size by playing on just 1 betline at 1p, playing Medusa as a penny slot. However, we really do recommend playing on more, preferably on all 25 if your budget allows. You’ll see wins more frequently and with all the potential multipliers added up, your payouts will be more significant than if you were just playing at just £0.01 a spin.

Hype or Not?

NextGen’s 25 payline Medusa is the real deal. It may not be the newest game in town and the graphics may feel a bit heavy, but this slot is jammed with brilliant features including generous multipliers. Many of the symbols pay decently and some handsome payouts can be had.

One of the most popular video slots, Medusa from NextGen has developed almost a cult following over the years. This is a game that plays well with plenty of exciting features and payouts that can catch you by surprise. Although there are newer versions such as the Medusa Megaways as well as the Medusa from Blueprint, which admittedly has better aesthetics, our team unanimously votes for the original 25 payline Medusa slot. You should give it a try too.
