Mega Moolah

Mega Moolah is the legendary progressive jackpot slot from Microgaming! Probably the most famous jackpot all time, Mega Moolah holds the world record for the biggest jackpot ever, with £13.2 million paid out to one British soldier. Astronomical prizes await in this simple 5 reel 25 payline game. Keep reading our Mega Moolah slot review for everything you need to know.

Look and Feel

You’ll be on a golden and sunny safari in Mega Moolah, with quirky animal companions on the reels. Sure, in this day and age the graphics in this slot aren’t the slickest and not much can be said about the music, but the visuals are still well drawn and you’ll find the vibe here warm and friendly.

How to Play

Mega Moolah plays like most other video slots. Your journey will begin with setting your bet size. There are 2 ways to do this. To keep things easy, you can select the “Bet” tab at the bottom of the game screen and find that your bet size can start from £0.25 a spin and go up to £6.25 a spin. Simply adjust up and down until you find your sweet spot and then you can press Spin. Alternatively, you can fine tune your bet. On the top left of the game screen, you’ll see a Settings button that looks like a cog. Open that and you can choose your Coin Size, which starts at 1p and goes to 5p, and the number of coins you bet per Line, going from 1 to 5. You’re always betting on all of the 25 lines.

These are the Mega Moolah symbols that will deliver the goods, starting from the highest value symbol:

  • Lion (also Wild)
  • Purple Shaman (also Scatter)
  • Elephant
  • Hyena
  • Giraffe
  • Zebra
  • Gazelle
  • A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9

Special Symbols

  • Scatter: Purple Shaman

Special Features and Bonuses

We’ll talk about how to win the Mega Moolah jackpot plus other features you can look forward to here:

Progressive Jackpot: There are actually 4 jackpots to Mega Moolah. The Mini, Minor, Major and Mega. The Mega is the one that is the millionaire and pays at least £1 million. The jackpot game is randomly triggered in the base game, although you do get better chances when you have a higher bet size. Once you’re in the jackpot game, you’ll see a Bonus Wheel. Give it a spin and you can win free spins or one of the jackpots.

Wild Lion: King of all animals, the Lion is the highest value and also a wild. In Mega Moolah, not only will the Wild Lion substitute other symbols to form a payline (with the exception of Scatters), but it will also boost that winning line with a 2x multiplier.

Scatter Free Spins: 3 of the funny looking Purple Shaman Scatters will trigger a round of 15 Free Spins. Wins during this round will come with an extra 3x multiplier.

Mega Moolah Compared to Other Slots

Mega Moolah is perhaps always compared to Mega Fortune, NetEnt’s flagship progressive jackpot. The two games have been neck to neck in terms of their massive jackpot payouts, each vying to break the World Record. Thus, needless to say, Mega Fortune also pays out in the multi-millions regularly, although it “only” starts seeding at £250,000 instead of Mega Fortune’s £1 million. Mega Moolah is known to have higher average wins and the progressive jackpot is usually won around the 8 to 9-week mark, compared to Mega Fortune which averages at 10 weeks.

Mega Moolah Fairness

The Mega Moolah slot RTP is placed at 90%. This is certainly lower than most video slots, the newer ones of which usually float at around 96%. However, Mega Moolah is actually known to be a low variance game, meaning even you can see frequent smaller prizes. We also have to bear in mind Mega Moolah is a progressive jackpot. Each bet that gets played contributes to the growing jackpot so if it had a higher RTP, the jackpot won’t be able to offer the £1 million prize that it’s famous for. As such, you’ll find that most progressive jackpots have lower RTPs. Then there’s also the fact that this is a Microgaming jackpot slot, and there’s been very high-profile wins. This game created a World Record when one British soldier walked away with £13.2million in 2015, and there’s been many other smaller multi-million pound wins since then. There’s nothing like real people stories to know that this is a fair game.

Tips for Playing Mega Moolah

Microgaming says it outright: bigger bets will lead to a higher chance of triggering the jackpot bonus game. You may want to consider the developer’s instructions here. At £0.25 per spin really isn’t much and many regular video slots start at this price. For a chance at a million pounds, it wouldn’t hurt to throw in a few more pennies if your budget allows. Still, many players have won the jackpot and took home a few million with relatively small sized bets.

Hype or Not?

Let’s begin by saying not everyone is going to win a progressive jackpot. Not everyone likes progressive jackpot games. Nonetheless, there is a certain thrill to the thought of early retirement for a few quid. This is what Mega Moolah is about and we certainly think that thrill is worthwhile, and it will certainly appeal to those who have more of a gambler streak will certainly appreciate this game.

Mega Moolah is one of the most famous progressive jackpots. Paying out regular in multi-million sums, it’s easy to see why. There is also a steady stream of small wins to keep you flowing, along with rounds of Free Spins and multipliers. However, we’ll be honest: your chances of winning that jackpot may not be very high and if you’re looking for bonus features and so on, there are plenty of video slots that do a better job. Mega Moolah is about trying for that possibility to realise a massive dream for small money and we think it’s definitely worth a couple of spins at least!
