Look and Feel

Gonzo has always been the ‘poster boy’ of online slots, but along in 2016 came a slotting hero who threatened to topple Gonzo from his perch. Rich Wilde was the name, and courtesy of Play’n GO this dashing archaeologist went in search of the fabled Book of the Dead. A slow-burning slot, this title become one of the most popular slots available in online casinos, and the most popular slot ever issued by Play’n GO. Now the online slotting world is rejoicing as Play’n GO have finally released the hotly-anticipated sequel to the Book of Dead as Rick goes after another fabled treasure in Rich Wilde & the Shield of Athena … and this time he’s got company!

Jackpot

Play’n GO may have hit the jackpot with this ongoing series, but you won’t be hitting the progressive jackpot if you play this game as it doesn’t have one! The most you can win, according to Play’n GO themselves, is one million coins, but you’ll find the casino where you are playing this title will set their own limits.

Play for Real Money

It’s unlikely you’ll be able to find a casino online in UK that offers this slot for play money or for free play, due to UKGC restrictions. There are plenty of places to play for real cash though, including the truly excellent LeoVegas casino. Check out this amazing site’s bonus offers before you sign up.

Rules

First and foremost Rich Wilde has a special guest alongside him for his new adventure, his lovely daughter, Cat (Cat Wilde … wild cat … geddit?). To commence Rich and Cat on their quest, select your bet size which can be anything from £0.10 to £100.00. Each spin costs ten coins.

There’s nothing unusual here about how wins are achieved – three or more identical symbols on a payline commencing from the left-hand reel. Wins are paid as coins as indicated in the following table.

Rich Wilde himself is the wild (or Wilde) symbol in this game, and substitutes for all other symbols except the scatter symbol.

Cat Wilde is the scatter symbol. Land three of her anywhere on the reels to gain ten free spins, four will obtain you a dozen freebies and five will max out with the award of fifteen free spins.

The Shield of Athena is a special wild that is not a wild symbol normally but also is one that will turn wild upon any spin. When this happens you are automatically awarded a ‘Medusa Re-Spin’ for free, too. The shield will lock in place for the re-spin and any wilds or winning symbols landed will award one further spin. Rich Wilde is mutated into a shield during your re-spins, but his daughter Cat is removed from the reels as long as re-spins continue.

Graphics and Sounds

The original Rich Wilde game was pretty awesome to look at, and the sequel is just as good-looking (and not just Rich and Cat as the fabled shield of Athena contains the face of Medusa, who was so ugly she could turn anyone she looked at to stone). Having said that, the animations involved here are pretty limited. Medusa scowls and her hair-snakes start wriggling, Rich Wilde does a winky thing and Cat (who seems to have modelled upon the actress Rhea Seehorn) … does something, and that’s about it aside of course for the spinning of the reels.

Musically, it’s an epic orchestral theme that would not have seemed out of place if used in an episode of ‘Game of Thrones’. It does get a little repetitive though, but it’s easy to put it out of mind as you play. Aside from that it’s all the usual stings and stabs.

Conclusion

Many people never managed to fathom the popularity of Rich Wilde & the Book of the Dead as it was a very basic slot with features that had been done elsewhere and sometimes better. It was probably the very simplicity of the slot that actually made it so popular, and Play’n GO have decided to bank on this as Rich Wilde & the Shield of Athena follows similar lines. With wilds, scatters and re-spins there is nothing here that is likely to take your breath away, but that doesn’t make Rich Wilde & the Book of the Dead an unplayable game.

If you were expecting a spectacular sequel then you are going to be disappointed, but if you were expect more of the same you’re going to be delighted. Why not join Rich Wilde in his quest for the Shield of Athena at one of our recommended online casinos?
