Look and Feel
Riddle Reels: A Case of Riches is a new online slot game from Play’n GO, released in early August 2020. Play’n GO have stuck to their ‘one game release per week during 2020’ pledge despite COVID-19, but there have been tiny signs of late that the quality is beginning to wane, just a little. The riddle then here is as follows:
Riddle Reels, a Play’n GO game
Is it a fresh one, or more of the same?
Features all seen, or something brand new?

Ahem … Despite the ‘Riddle Reels’ prefix this is the first game released by Play’n GO with such a title, so perhaps it’s the first in a planned series? For now, let’s concentrate on this title alone.
The first riddle we can solve with this game is whether it has a progressive jackpot. The answer is elementary, my dear slots player – it doesn’t! You can still win a nice amount should good fortune smile your way, up to 5,000 times the value of your bet.
Play for Real Money
You will not be able to play this game for free or for play money in the UK. This is down to the rules and regulations put in place by the UKGC. Have no fear, though! There are plenty of places with UKGC licences that carry Play’n GO’s titles. One such delightful place is the 666 Casino! This is a fantastic casino with plenty of excellent titles and great bonuses too! Go and check them out!
The first thing you will notice with this slot is that it has three reels instead of five. Indeed, Play’n GO are one of the few developers still making three-reel slots, and an excellent job they are doing of it too! Like Rally4Riches, this is another Play’n GO slot that you should not dismiss out of hand simply because it has three reels.
To start solving the riddle you need to select your bet size. This is a fixed amount from £0.10 to £100.00 per spin. All wins are landed as three identical symbols on one of the nine available paylines. Wins are paid as a proportion of your bet size, as follows:
|Symbol||3 on a payline|
The ‘riddle’ symbol is a scatter in this game, and you need to land three anywhere to award yourself the bonus feature (landing two scatters will re-spin the reel that doesn’t have a scatter to give you one further chance of landing the third – if the scatter doesn’t land then it’s time for the mystery feature. The scatters take over the whole reel then transform into suspect or weapon symbols).
The bonus feature is a board game in which initially you are awarded four dice rolls. Each roll with trigger a clue which in turn will award you a cash prize. You can collect clue points by gaining winning spins in order to fill up the clue point meter. Once you have used all four dice rolls you will trigger the clue point wheel feature.
The more clue points you gain, the greater the proportion of the clue points wheel will feature a ‘winning’ section. If the pointer lands in the winning section when it lands, then you’ve solved the case! You earn yourself a mega free spin in which up to three multiplier wilds and the suspect/weapon is revealed to hopefully land you a really beneficial win.
There are three wilds in this game; a normal wild and wilds with a x2 and a x3 multiplier. Any win in which the wild lands is multiplied by any multiplier landed and multipliers can be combined. Wilds substitute for all other symbols aside from the scatter.
Graphics and Sounds
The music you hear in this game is purely what you would expect – a mysterious orchestral theme with an occasional spooky choir. Although this game is obviously based on Sherlock Holmes, the music actually puts us in mind of a very different hero – a certain boy wizard. The other sounds are the clinking of the reels and the cascade of coins should you win.
The graphics fit in well with the Sherlock Holmes theme. There is not much in the way of animation aside from the spinning of the reels, though. One oddity – a dwarf-sized Holmes appears if you are fortunate enough to land a big win. This seems at odds with the serious nature of this game!
While Riddle Reels: A Case of Riches is certainly a decent enough game, we can’t help but think it would have been better served as a 5×3 slot as opposed to 3×3. In our playing experience with this game wins come very infrequently. Smaller wins but more often would have been better.
If you like three-reel slots in your quest to play the best new online slots in 2020, then be sure to give Riddle Reels: A Case of Riches a spin at one of our many recommended online casinos.
A. No. Despite the ‘riddle’ motif you can play this game using almost zero brain power. You certainly do not need a similar intellect to that of Sherlock Holmes!
A. While 3×3 slots can be seen as being a bit old-fashioned, the best 3×3 slots can be as entertaining to play as 5×3 slots. Play’n GO have released many superb 3×3 slots, including Rally4Riches which we reviewed last month.
A. In the original series of books and stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle his enigmatic detective never said such a thing, not did he ever wear a deerstalker hat!
