Starz Megaways Review

Look and Feel

Starz Megaways from Pragmatic Play is the latest slot to be handed the Megaways do-over. This used to be a standard 5×3 slot but thanks to the Megaways concept it now has six reels and the maximum of seven symbols on any one reel. Unlike other slots that have been Megaways-ed, there is no ‘extra’ horizontal reel above the central four reels to gift those reels with an extra symbol.

The original Starz looked a lot like the classic NetEnt slot Starburst, but it simply didn’t play as well (how could it?). By reading this review you will learn if the Megaways version of Pragmatic Play’s slot is an improvement or not.

This game does not possess any kind of stellar progressive jackpot. The maximum amount you can win here is 10,000 times your bet, which – as the max bet is £100 – could make you a millionaire … except that the casino you play this game at will put their own limits on how much you can win.

Play for Real Money

Due to those pesky UKGC regulations, you will not be able to play Starz Megaways in the UK for play money. If you want to take this slot out for a spin, then you’re going to have to sign up for online casino slots site … and one site we heartily recommend is Betway. This is a well-run site that’s great for sports bettors too. Why not sign up for an account there today?

The Megaways concept randomises the number of symbols upon each reel on each spin. When a reel lands, it could have just two symbols upon it, or it could have seven. This randomises the number of paylines available for each spin, up to that maximum of 117,649.

Wins are paid as a ratio of your total bet. To score a win you need to land at least three identical symbols in sequence on any row from the left-hand reel onwards. Wins are paid as follows:

Symbol3 on a payline4 on a payline5 on a payline6 on a payline
Blue Jewel0.50.751.52.5
Purple Jewel0.40.50.751
Red Jewel0.
Blue Jewel0.
Pink Jewel0.
Orange Atom0.
Red Atom0.
Green Atom0.10.250.350.4
Yellow Atom0.10.250.350.4
Brown Atom0.10.250.350.4

Do not worry if you think those payouts look a little tight. As there are 117,649 ways to win you often combine payline wins to add to your overall winning amount.

A star with ‘wild’ upon it is the wild symbol in this game (obviously). It only appears on the central four reels though and substitutes for all other symbols aside from the bonus symbol. When it lands during the base game the wild will always expand to fill the entire reel.

The bonus symbol can land anywhere. You need a minimum of three bonus symbols to trigger the bonus feature – free spins. The number of free spins awarded is as follows:

• 3 bonus symbols – 6 free spins

• 4 bonus symbols – 8 free spins

• 5 bonus symbols – 10 free spins

• 6 bonus symbols – 15 free spins

During free spins all wilds that land expand just like in the base game, but unlike the base game they become sticky and remain in place until the end of the free spins bonus round.

That is it as far as features go with this slot. Like the game it is … ahem … paying tribute to there are not that many bells and whistles as Pragmatic Play obviously feel that complexity is something that is not needed here!

Graphics and Sounds

Graphically, the games looks as basic as the gameplay. This is not a slot that needs a lot of flashiness to be honest, although perhaps it could do with a little more in the way of animation, as the only aspect of the game that is animated is the title logo (aside from the reels spinning round and round of course). Any symbols that do feature in a win kind of ‘swell’ a little and that is about it. It’s a colourful slot, at least.

The music selected – in our esteemed opinion – doesn’t really fit in with the space theme. It’s kind of a funky 80s disco soundtrack that would be more suit a slot that has a sunny or holiday themed-slot. The music does not really inspire you to contemplate a stellar space rocket trek. The rest of the sounds used do fit the slot a little better, with stings, stabs and crescendos.

The original Starz slot was not one that got our pulses races upon its original release to be honest, and the adding of the MegaWays concept does not really do much to up its playability. It’s probably a case of Pragmatic Play seeing all the other slots software providers jump on the Megaways bandwagon and thinking “we’ll have some of that!”

Why not see if you think differently by playing Starz Megaways at one of our many recommended slots and casino sites?
