Wizard of Oz Review

Look and Feel

Wizard of Oz is an immensely popular 5 reel, 3 row slot game from WMS. It probably does not need us to tell you that this game is based upon the classic MGM musical of the same name. In the film – which was the first film ever made to start in black and white and then switch to colour – a young girl named Dorothy is swept to a magical land from her farm in Kansas. She befriends a scarecrow, a tin man and a cowardly lion who all help to send her safely back home.

Jackpot

Even if you look somewhere over the rainbow you will not find a progressive jackpot with this game, as there isn’t one! The maximum you can win during normal play is 10,000 coins. As the maximum coin value is £5.00, your maximum possible win is £50,000. This can be increased if you land feature multipliers.

Play for Real Money

Even though the Wizard of Oz slot has been around for some time, you probably won’t be able to play a Wizard of Oz demo game in the UK because of UKGC restrictions. You may be able to if you sign up for one of our recommend slots, casino or bingo sites though, plus you get the added advantage of the chance to play for real money, and to take advantage of any bonuses or promos the site offers. We heartily recommend you sign up for the Leo Vegas casino. It’s a great site with lots of games plus many tempting offers!

Rules

The interface used by WMS is a little unusual, but it’s not so complicated that it will completely befuddle you! You just select the slider along the bottom to choose your bet per spin. As there are thirty paylines in operation at all times, your coin size is your bet per spin divided by thirty.

The Wizard of Oz logo symbol is wild in this game and substitutes for all other symbols aside from the scatter symbols. These are the Jackpot and Feature symbols, which trigger the bonus features instead.

Wins are secured by landing at least three identical symbols on a payline from the left-hand reel onwards. Wins are paid as multiples of your coin value according to the following table:

The game has a number of bonus features, as follows:

  • Glinda Good Witch Feature: At random points in the base game Glinda the Good Witch appears and will change one of the reels so it is full of wild symbols.
  • Oz Pick Feature: This feature is triggered when a Feature symbol appears anywhere on reels 1, 3 or 5. This will trigger either the award of a monetary amount, the Road to Emerald City feature (if max paylines are chosen), or the Winged Monkey feature.
  • Winged Monkey Feature: Eight free spins are awarded. The feature symbol(s) is transformed into a Winged Monkey Wild. If you land this wild on reel three the Winged Monkey Wild symbol is triggered. Winged monkeys appear, remove a number of symbols and replace them with wilds. The Winged Monkey feature can be retriggered.
  • Road to Emerald City Feature: A player must choose from a group of Emeralds, and may then be given a cash award or a journey to the Scarecrow Corn Field, Tin Man Apple Orchard, Cowardly Lion Dark Forest, the Wicked Witch Castle or the Emerald City. The player must then find the respective character via a series of Gold Charms to be awarded a cash prize.

Graphics and Sounds

All the graphics and sound used in this game are stills taken from the original 1930s movie version of the Wizard of Oz. The graphics are not that brilliant in the base game, except when Glinda Good Witch turns up and send one of the reels completely wild, or Toto is on a winning line and barks his approval. The graphics do improve with the bonus features though, especially when the winged monkeys appear.

The music and sound FX are a little disappointing too. There are some swirling strings when the reels tumble, but that’s about all, apart from the odd bell and fanfare. Things step up considerably with the extras features, though. The Winged Monkey feature is the definite winner, with thundering drums and the cackling of that unfriendly green witch.

Conclusion

The Wizard of Oz film is an utter classic, but the same cannot be said for the Wizard of Odd slot, although it’s still a very decent game. There have even been three sequels to this title: Wizard of Oz: Ruby Slippers, Wizard of Oz: Emerald City and Wizard of Oz: Road to the Emerald City. The original version does have plenty of great features, but the graphics and sounds are ‘very 2012’.
