Comprehensive List of Big Time Gaming Slots Sites

There is no doubt which software company has had the biggest influence on the online slotting realm over the past few years – that accolade belongs to Big Time Gaming, or BTG for short. A few moons ago they added the Megaways concept to one of their own slots. This concept was such as hit that other software houses came banging on BTG’s door to ask if they could add it to their own slots. Big Time Gaming agreed … but at a price!

The Big Time Gaming Megaways concept really came of age in 2020 when NetEnt allowed their subsidiary Red Tiger to add the Megaways concept to that most classic of classic slots, Gonzo’s Quest. Now every single online casino in the wagering sphere will have at least one Megaways title, if not a dozen or so!

Who are Big Time Gaming?

Big Time Gaming were founded in 2011 by three big industry names – Nik Robinson, the founder of New Tech Media; Huw McIntosh who worked under Nik at New Tech Media and Openbet; and Ian Schmidt who was one of the creative names behind Rock Star Games.

Nik was the brains behind the creation of Big Time Gaming. After founding NT Media in 1996 he sold them to News International in 2005 although he remained with them (renamed ‘OpenBet’) as a creative director until 2011. During that time Nik had forged a partnership with Huw, so it was only fit and proper that when Nik founded BTG in 2011, he took Huw with him. The pair then hired Ian Schmidt from Rock Star Games to complete their creative triumvirate.

After years of ‘not a lot of noise’ in their fortunes, BTG decided to take one of their more popular slots – Bonanza – and add on a new concept. This idea added an extra reel to the slot (so that it became a six-reel slot) and allowed the number of symbols on each reel to become random after every spin, from two to seven.

This also completely randomised the number of paylines on each spin, as Bonanza Megaways was an ‘all ways’ pay slot. If a player was fortunate enough to land six reels all containing seven symbols, then the slot would have a staggering 117,649 paylines!

This concept became a huge winner for this company, and other software companies began to take notice. BTG offered to licence out the Megaways slot and countless other software companies said, yes please!

What Makes Big Time Gaming Unique?

Of course – Megaways! Big Time Gaming are really the first software company to come up with a unique concept and licence it out to other companies – successfully, at least!

There are even variants with the Megaways concept itself. Some versions of Megaways games will have a mini-reel that sits above the main six reels, covering reels two, three, four and five. This in effect adds one further reel to the number that are available, although it does not increase that maximum number of 117,649 paylines.

Megaways slots also have the avalanche feature where winning symbols fall from the reels if they are involved in a win. This allows new symbols to fall from above to potentially create new winning paylines. This concept is often coupled with a prize multiplier that increases the more that successive avalanche features are achieved. Reach a certain level and a bonus feature may be triggered.

After the success of Megaways Big Time Gaming are attempting to do the same with so-called ‘cluster pays’ slots. In 2020 they released the excellent ‘Star Clusters Megaclusters’ in which large clusters of symbols split into smaller ones. With this game the number of symbols within the playing grid can max out to a staggering 256!

What Could Big Time Gaming Do Better?

Hmm … what could Big Time Gaming do better? The company has been so monumentally successful since 2016 it is not really our place to tell them what they could do better!

If there is one bone of contention is that all Megaways slots tend to look a little same-y (aside from 2020’s Gonzo’s Quest Megaways which retained the original title’s look and feel). A little more visual variety would not go amiss!

Three of the Best – Big Time Gaming Games

Monopoly Megaways

Monopoly Megaways Slot Game Review

We are not going to claim that the original Megaways games – Bonanza Megaways – is the among the best games that BTG have ever produced.

Instead, we are going to nominate Monopoly Megaways as a fine example of a Megaways game. It’s certainly better than actually playing Monopoly, with all that tedious maths and a trudge around an archaic London that makes no sense.

As well as the Megaways idea this game has lots of ideas based on nobody’s favourite board game. You circle the board as you spin the reels, collecting houses, hotels and cash as you go!

Who Wants to be a Millionaire Mystery Box

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Slot Review

As well as Megaways, Big Time Gaming have had a great deal of success at securing licensing deals of which Who Wants to be a Millionaire Mystery Box is probably the best.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire is one of the most successful quiz shows in TV history, and in the UK it’s back on our screens after a four-year hiatus.

This BTG game takes it cues from the original quiz show format, but it adds an extra twist – the mystery box. Every spin of the reels offers you the opportunity of landing the mystery box, which may contain wilds, scatters or just a mystery symbol. This slot has 243 ways to win and a top prize of 12,000 coins.

Star Clusters Megaclusters

We’ve already mentioned this brilliant game once but this 2020 release is so good we feel it deserves a detailed explanation. This is a ‘cluster pays’ game in which clusters of identical symbols pay out as opposed to lines.

The screen begins with a 4×4 arrangement containing 16 symbols however, when symbols are involved in wins, they are replaced by a 2×2 grid containing smaller symbols. During the bonus round these symbols can split too, with the screen maxing out at 16×16!

The game really does become exciting when the tiny symbols appear as large clusters may result, winning you big time prizes!

FAQs

Q. How can an online slot have 117,649 ways to win?

A. Well, every spin of a Megaways slot will not have 117,649 ways to win. The 117,649 paylines are only available when each of the six reels contains seven symbols. As ‘all ways pay’ with a Megaways slot, this creates the (7^6) paylines, totalling 117,649.

Q. How much do other companies pay to lease the Megaways concept?

A. That, we guess, depends on the deal that is struck. If a company wants to lease the concept for one game then it’s probably more expensive (per usage) than for a number of games. It seems likely will be for a percentage of the take, but we are only guessing.

Q. Did anyone play Big Time Gaming’s titles before they came up with Megaways?

A. A few did, but they were not the most successful slot provider in the world before Megaways. Megaways simply catapulted them into a new dimension!

The Bottom Line

Big Time Gaming are a real success story, and it’s a story that’s showing no signs of reaching any kind of conclusion, any day soon. The company have hit on a real winner with Megaways – they are the slotting equivalent of the company who first thought that slicing the bread before selling it would be a decent idea!

Expect more and more of your favourite slots to appear with the Megaways (and Megaclusters) concept added as time marches on!
